"The Kennedy Chronicle" is a school newspaper for the John F. Kennedy school in Somerville, MA. Our paper is written entirely by our 6th to 8th reporters who are, frankly, absolutely stellar. We have published 10 issues that are available online here. We are the only middle grades newspaper in Somerville but possibly also the greater Boston area.
The previous two issues this school year and all issues of the last two years were funding by a Somerville Arts Council grant. The grant cycle is calendar year based, not school year, and for 2026 we received $1,500 whereas previous years we've received $3,525. We are currently $600 short to print a final issue of the school year.
We did ads the first year. Shout outs to Dragon Pizza (who ran ads in several issues), Porter Square Books, JJ Vaccaro, Deborah Mason, Union Square Donuts, American Flatbread, All She Wrote Books, Parkour Generations, Magpie Kids, Laura Pitone, Dos Manos Kitchen, and Somerville Youth Soccer plus individual donors who all rans ads. See the last page of each issue for a full list.
The problem is that businesses operate at roughly the same schedule as school so it was too much for the students (and the adults).
That being said, if you are a company who wants to fund all $600 of this next issue, we will give you a big ole ad space and you can come to our end of the year Nacho/Not-acho Party.
On it. We've applied for other grants but we won't hear back until July.
We value having a physical copy of our paper on legit newsprint for the students. They work hard (and so do we) to produce a quality newspaper.
Everything but the stickers is print on demand. If you live Somerville and buy a sticker, I will walk the sticker over to your house.
Thank you for noticing, they ARE really weird prices. $10 from each print on demand purchase goes to printing our next issue. The rest is the base printing price which does not round out to an even number. The stickers I paid for and all $5 goes towards the paper. Huzzah!
We hear you! It costs $1364 for 400 copies or one for each student. We've been trying to stretch our grant money by printing only 300 copies but we hear you! Our goal is to print one for each student going forward.
Miss Hanly does the proofing. You're stuck with Kristen at the moment. She, uses unnecessary commas and has beef with the word "moreover".
